Normal Skin
Normal skin is clear, supple and soft. It is neither too dry nor too oily. It is not very sensitive to the sun and the climate.
How to Treat Normal Skin:
- Normal skink requires cleaning twice a day mld baby soap, water and toned with something mild, like rose water.
- Follow every cleansing with a mild freshener to keep pores tight and to remove traces of cleanser clinging to the skin.
- Use an astringent with low alcohol content.
- Always use a mild, oil-based moisturizer under makeup to help retain surface moisture.
- Guard against the drying, aging effects of the sun by using makeup products that contain a sunscreen.
Dry Skin
Dry skin looks dull, feels tight after washing and needs constant protection and moisturizing to avoid flaking and peeling.
How to Treat Dry Skin:
- Moisturize your skin as it provides a seal over your skin to keep water from escaping.
- Thicker moisturizers work well, such as over the counter brands Eucerin and Cetaphil.
- Avoid harsh and drying soaps. Instead choose mild soaps that have added oils, such as Neutrogena, Basis or Dove.
- Choose fabrics that are gentle to your skin.
Oily Skin
Oily skin might feel soft and supple, bit it looks shiny and needs to be cleansed several times a day. Pores are larger than normal or dry skin. This type of skin is often prone to outbreaks of acne.
How to Treat Oily Skin:
- For oily skin you should start with gentle foaming facial wash.
- Use a benzoyl peroxide face wash in the morning and a 2% salicylic acid wash at night. This removes dirt and oil without stripping away moisture.
- Follow the wash with glycolic acid pads or astringent.
- Finish with a water-based oil free moisturizer.
- Carry blotting papers in your purse for oil control all day long.
Sensitive Skin
Sunlight has bad effects on sensitive skin. It gets sun burns easily and may develop rashes, blotches or spots when exposed. Chemcals found in commercial products are harsh to sensitive skin.
How to Treat Sensitive Skin:
- Select a cleanser that does not contain alcohol or other harsh ingredients. It should be mild, hypoallergenic and specifically designed for sensitive skins.
- Toning is not always recommended for those with sensitive or dry skin, but select an alcohol-free toner.
- There is a wide range of moisturizers and face creams that nourish and hydrate your skin. Select light and fragrance-free moisturizer designed for sensitive skin
- Using a sunscreen, especially during the summer months is essential.
- Use hydrating and nourishing mask twice a week.
Combination Skin
Usually the T-zone is oily and the outer edge of the face can be dry! Special care is needed to avoid drying of skin on the outer edges of the face while fighting the oil in the T-zone! Perhaps the biggest frustration for those with combination skin is how to care for it properly.
How to Treat Combination Skin:
- Use the cleanser twice a day, preferably before bed at night and after get up in the morning. These are the times your face most needs to be cleansed. But if you have combination skin it is imperative.
- Choose an alcohol-free medicated toner or astringent. If toning dries out your skin or causes irritation, skip this step.
- Use the moisturizer on dry areas only. Using it in your oily T-zone will only make that area worse.
- Choose a mask suited to your specific needs. Moisturizing, deep cleansing, acne-fighting, exfoliating, and soothing masks are all options.
- Remember to drink plenty of water, take multivitamins, and eat colorful foods for skin-healthy antioxidants!
